11:21 pm - Of Motorcycles...
...and entrusting your life to your friends :)

I've sort of had it pondering in the back of my head that I'd eventually like to learn to drive a motorcycle and have one.

Confirmed.

Dad used to be a motorcycle safety instructor, Jason and I used to go to daycare on the bike, and it's been about 16ish years since I've ridden. Moonie and I went out tonight, and it was awesome.

Also. Need a wii fit. Was FUNNN!!! Great exercise, fun games, good to watch someone work on while doing other stuff. Awesomeness.

To address everything all at once and increase my post count at the same time!!

Dr. Lewis was good to me; be aware that he does not necessarily know about insurance. The quote the office gave me was for approximately $4k out of pocket, because they do not quite grok that my dental plan works exactly the same way my health insurance does. As a dentist went, though, I have *never* walked out of a dentist's office with anything other than a "meh, tolerable" until this dentist. He was *SO* patient, and did not condescend, patronize, or otherwise talk down to me or the staff that I heard. Took questions, was so nice. Awesomeness.

It's almost certainly going to be under IV sedation. My time in the hospital pretty much cured my terror of needles, so I'm surprisingly okay with it. Much more okay than risking being AWAKE for that crap :) The original referral definitely does IV, and I requested that the second referral be to someone who does as well :)

I deal *horribly* with vicodin, only somewhat better on darvocet, but darvocet has the advantage of also knocking me out, so I'll probably go with that (it has the added benefit of my already having a prescription for it). I'm forbidden advil/ibuprofen - my choices are tylenol derivatives only due to my stomach issues.

Once it's scheduled, I'll be doing the stock-up routine, see what all is advisable, and Andy is a pretty good sport about the "honey can you go get" list. Just waiting for the callbacks on scheduling at this point. Other advantage is that the dentist gave me a helpful mouthwash for my cleaning that seems to have helped the swelling (or at least the pain).

Because it seems like that's the most frequent cause of my updates this year.

10:14 pm - Helpful resource
If anyone else recently updated their voter information in a way that may or may not have changed your designated precinct, go here and double check.

When I updated my TxDL in December with my new address, I specifically selected "update my voter registration" so that I could vote 2 minutes away. I noticed I hadn't gotten my registration card, but shrugged it off. Guess where I have to try to make it tomorrow to vote?

That's right. Precinct for my last registered address, which was on Manor Rd. 111 E. MLK if I want to vote tomorrow. Likely not going to happen. Can't break away from work for that long (even though she would have to give me the time, I have actual work to do), not about to fight morning or evening traffic to do it.

I am pissed as hell at Travis county, and at myself for not following up on the lack of new card.

That is all.

12:04 pm - Webcomic Recommendation
Okay, so, I don't think I've recommended this comic on here yet. Or not recently enough, or something. I know a couple people on my flist read it, and they'll agree with what I am about to post.

Questionable Content is one of the funniest webcomics out there, especially to those of us who remember Mojo's and are generally weird. Very worth reading.

ETA: link is having weird issues, probably involving LJ and markup. If it doesn't work for you, go to www.questionablecontent.net to read :)

If you've seen my black hoodie with a robot thing on the front left shoulder, that is Pint Size. He's from this comic. He is awesome.

So go read it. It took me about two weeks to read the archives when I started, but Andy and I picked it up around strip 700ish. It's completely worth the whole read. Pay special attention to backgrounds.

01:13 pm - Walk for Crohn's April 27th
So, April 27th, as Elise posted, is the walk for Crohn's. I've discovered that a young woman I know through fencing was diagnosed at the Longhorn, and spent the week after that tournament in the hospital. She has not had a great time of it either, and is still going through her adjustments and figuring out what she should be taking and all that. So the UTFC may be interested in getting in on a massive effort for this.

Linky again: http://www.cctakesteps.org/Register/States/Texas.htm

Bad news for Andy and me, though. We have both already volunteered to work the Division I National Championship event that is that weekend, which is the event that determines who fences in the Olympics, and are expecting confirmation that we are hired :( Means we may not be able to attend, I had misremembered the dates.

I still intend to pass word around, and there is a chance one or both of us will not be confirmed after all, but that's what's up there.

08:40 pm - So, tomorrow!
Or, how I planned badly?

Getting out of the hospital tomorrow morning, barring any major catastrophes that all have a near-zero-yet-Murphyesque chance in hell. The timing will depend on my nursing staff, who have all been wonderful, and the presence of a ride.

If Dad is here early enough, and we nag pretty hard, he may be able to do it, but he has a 12:05 flight out of ABIA, so that's pushing. Is there anyone who is available tomorrow midday to come fetch me and a bag? I'm going to pack most everything else up tonight and send it home with Dad and Andy, just keeping my clothes for tomorrow, my computer and a book.

I'll have a brief visit from E and Jas tonight, but I'm going to go back upstairs here soon and will lose internet access, so I planned really really badly because now I'll be coordinating via phone. I don't want anyone to worry - if no one is available, I'll have lunch here and Andy will fetch me after he gets off work, doesn't change anything even a little bit, but of course the earlier I go home tomorrow the earlier I shower at home and get to nap on my own couch :)

Will ETA this once I head back upstairs with whatever updates I have :) Thanks in advance, hate to do it this way but I recovered too slowly to plan well!

ETA: Moonie saves the day again :) My hero! (Hey E I'm borrowing your hero. Thx!)

09:47 pm - I blame the oxygen sensor...
...for any and all of my typos.

So, out of surgery since Wednesday evening. Had fun learning to move again. Have happy button for painkillers, but I'm not using it too much. I still have a tube my nose and can't eat anything until I fart, which is obnoxious.

I'm going to be fine. The surgery I had is a resection, took out piece of the small intestine, the appendix while they were in there, a small piece of the colon, and sewed it all back together. Incision doesn't look bad, but it's not gorgeous by my standards. Damnit, I was working on flattening those abs.

I'll be out early next week, ideally, and then have to work out with my doctor what kind of work and exercise restrictions I'm on. Going to be keeping my dietary prejudices, and will be on a good treatment that should keep this under control, though of course there are no guarantees.

I have everything I need, my Dad is in town until Wedenesday and he and Andy are taking good care of me. I overdid a little bit on Friday, but the limits just keep going up as I get stronger (which will be even faster rate once I get to eaaatt!!!!)(so hungry).

Post all kinds of questions if you have them, not sure what all I've left out. Will have some free time next week for sure :)

10:54 am - Surgery update
I'm on the schedule for this afternoon to have my surgery. The idea is to take out the part of the small intestine that has been constricting and the adjacent appendix and portion of the colon that have been annoyed because of it, reconnect the lot and close it up so that all that is left is healthy, unaffected stuffs that will behave and can be kept from getting this bad with proper, constant and consistent treatment.

My father is flying in this evening, should be landing around the time I get out of recovery. I'll be in the hospital for a while, my room number is available by calling Andy or me, and I don't know when I'll be up for visitors since I'll probably be loopy for a while.

If you do come visit, be aware that they are having to keep my insides pretty well drained via a nose tube, which I think looks horrible but Andy and others have dealt pretty well with seeing it.

As for me, I've been feeling pretty miserable - don't want to be here, never expected to have to need surgery, and just generally nervous about everything. I'll be totally out for it, but I'm still so scared.

I'll have Andy post updates to his journal as he has them, he's doing his best to keep people in the loop. Hope to be back to posting in a couple of days, will see how fast I can recover and get back down to the cafe for internet :)

08:00 am - Incidental furniture search...
So, Andy and I planned a housewarming party, got an enthusiastic response, supplied for a large, well-tipsy group, and ... now have a *lot* of alcohol. Occupying our kitchen table.

We're happy to have stock on hand, but we'd also like our kitchen back. What kind of things have people had luck with as bars? We haven't found anything out-and-about that we're both willing to pay for and like for the purpose, and I certainly want my parents to live a long happy life so I can't have either of their (very very cool) bar setups yet.

Aside: my mother's bar was wrought for her in iron by my grandfather, who was one of the neatest men ever to walk the planet even if he did arrange for us never to be able to map our family tree on modern software (long, other story involving lots of weddings). Glass tops and curling vines, very neat. My father's bar is a gorgeous teak design that my grandmother had that is elegant, functional, and generally awesome.

Moving on. We tried Ikea, haven't hit bed bath and beyond (yet, I'm still plotting the use of my delightful gift cards!), and I don't know if Andy has done the craigslist thing or not - I don't generally have the patience for searching there, but when I get sick enough of the current arrangement I'll probably do that.

All our wood furniture is oaken colored except the bookshelves, which we like in the lighter birch color to relieve the overwhelming darkness of the books :) So, suggestions? Alternate ideas? Andy is also open to building the thing from scratch if we work up a design.

03:09 pm - So, for those who weren't quite playing along at home...
...Friday, woke up with severe stomach pains, went to doctor, fussed about checking into the hospital because I had somewhere else I *really* wanted to be this weekend. Spent all of Friday in varying degrees of stomach pain, Saturday in varying degrees of boredom, made it home around 1ish today.

Turns out my Crohn's disease flared again, and we're revising my medications to try to match it. I'm concerned that Dr. Friedman and I have philosophical differences on this one - everything I've found says that the flares will happen no matter what treatment you use, so my philosophy is to just medicate best possible and take painkillers for the rest, while hers seems to be keep switching medications and spend the time in the hospital as needed. Hrmmm.

May have to investigate other options, or something. We'll see how the new medicinal regimen works out.

Going back to work tomorrow, and nothing left to worry about :)

07:29 pm - Will someone explain to me...
...why, after a half our workout and another 15 minutes of footwork and some quick hand drills to get my grip back on my sabre...

... I feel like a lazy damn slob?

I'm very confused. This is in addition to the 30 situps and reps for the obliques that I do every single morning before showering. Yet, maybe because my knees still hurt or my house is messy, I still feel lazy and dumb.

Grrrrrrrrrr.

Logic clearly does not enter in to anything.

I have some paperwork I want to do, a check to mail for deposit, and the kitchen needs some cleaning, the house needs to be picked up, we have to figure out what to do with the non-fiction... maybe the problem is that things seem kind of endless? Even having gotten a shocking amount of personal business accomplished this week... even having (finally) recovered some definition on abs (when I was a ROTC cadet, I had a rock hard stomach - having to do 60 a day just to pass PFTs will do that to you)... got my billing address updated (freaking finally!) with SSFCU, APA, USFA, USAA, my dentist... you'd think I'd be satisfied.

Bugger.

08:13 pm - NYE Culinary Experiment
So, I've decided to try again with cooking the tasty pasta from my grandparents.

Worst directions ever are on the back of the package. In fullness, they read as follows:

"COOKING INSTRUCTIONS.

Due to its [sic! cool!] high yield and in order to obtain the best results, our Italian Pasta must be cooked in plenty of water (8 pints to 1 lb). It must be put in boiling salted water and stirred from time to time. At the right cooking point it must be removed from the heat, taking care to pour a glass of cold water on it. It must not be drained completely."

My issue, of course, is that it fails to expound on the topic of "the right cooking point." I have also opted to do mostly chicken broth, so we'll see how that goes.

The website, www.riscossa.it, does come with an English version, which is good. Of course, the tempo di coturra, presumably the cooking time, is listed as 7 minutes. At which point the pasta is not done. Hrmmm. Maybe the broth is absorbed more slowly than the water.

Continuing the experiment. The flavor seems to be getting very very close to what I'm remembering it should be (based on similar experiments conducted by my dear mother). As the experiment progresses, I note that they are *not* kidding about high yield. I had done the calculation incorrectly, originally using only 48 ounces of liquid, and I am now glad I added the extra 16 ounces for my 1/2 lb of pasta.

Okay, is now the correct texture and flavor. Temporarily suspending the notion of pouring cold water on it, since it seems about right to me.

ETA: Damn I'm good.

04:40 pm - A very Merry Christmas!!
So, Andy and I just did Christmas (now that he's home from work).

He got me a very nice sleeved blanket (literally - blanket, with sleeves so I can use my hands comfortably while being nice and warm). My grandparents got me a Wal-mart gift card and a nice italian pasta that I've not had a lot of luck cooking, but I'll ask for tips. Our friend Aaron clearly loves us a *lot* since he sent us a $100 gift card to the deliriously delicious Melting Pot restaurant.

Andy got a dremel set of amazing awesomeness from my parents, and he squeed. Cutely. I got him the complete set of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels, including two of the three prequels to the series, and a Mensa brain-teaser-a-day calender for work.

We are, however, puzzled by one of our gifts. Someone sent us a very high-tech, lightweight carbon shaft pool cue with laser guidance from the tip. Technically illegal in match play, but still a fun practice toy. The question becomes, "who sent it?" We really appreciate it, thank you so much! Just... confused.

We'll be trading gifts with friends at our weekly Thursday night dinner gathering in a couple days :) In the meantime, Merry $Midwinter_Festival to all and a Happy new year :)

12:41 am - Summary time!!!
We are MOVED!!! The apartment is clean, I'm dropping off the keys tomorrow even though they're not open (would have been tonight but I lacked envelope!), and it's ready to be done with.

The master bedroom is officially clean, if not totally unpacked. I actually made the bed. Unpacking will involve me going through many boxes of clothes, deciding which are clean and keepers and which are dirty and/or not-keepers. Then it will be unpacked.

We set up the gigantic (not kidding - freaking huge, not sure how it fit in the truck, OMG massive) sectional sofa tonight. Comfy!!! Definitely a focus piece. Going to be GREAT with a fire (we have a fireplace. Awesomeness). We also now have a refrigerator, which is good because we got a 10 lb smoked turkey as a housewarming gift. Best present ever, since I had nothing remotely resembling the ability to cook tonight, and the turkey was thawed and fully cooked and easy to slice a leg off of :) Tasty, tasty protein+tryptophan.

I think the master bathroom and/or kitchen is my next project, then the office so that I'm ready for internet on Monday. That's right, no internet until Monday, because we went with cable, and the house's phone line isn't connected, so even though we have the modem and all the cables, we lack the internets. Crazy.

My plan for tomorrow is to hang out at Elise's and bake quiches, then go to Truffle's for dinner, then go to Andy's parents' house for mandatory social time :) Should be fun! I will have internet most of tomorrow, maybe Friday evening depending on plans, maybe Saturday evening, mostly not on Sunday, then officially on Monday at the house.

Friend at work knows a lady who rescues Corgis informally, so he'll put me in touch with her for my Christmas puppy. This is about the only good thing to come out of work, because everything else is still frustrating and stupid except the *actual tasks themselves.* It's annoying because I have this impression most people are bored with their jobs because they hate the job. I love the job and have difficulty with the management policies. I have the email address of our new HR manager with Finlay Fine Jewelry, so maybe she can help.

Moving on. All moved, all job interesting stuff covered, all life stuff pretty boring. Reminds me, I need to make new post-to group. Questions, comments, smart-ass remarks?

US Military Rules by Service

Marine Corps Rules:
1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
3. Have a plan.

2. Adjust temperature on air-conditioner.
3. See what's on HBO.
4. Ask "what is a gunfight?"
5. Request more funding from Congress with a "killer" Power Point

6. Wine & dine 'key' Congressmen, invite DOD & defense industry executives.
7. Receive funding, set up new command and assemble assets.
8. Declare the assets "strategic" and never deploy them operationally.
9. Hurry to make 13:45 tee-time.
10. Make sure the base is as far as possible from the conflict but close

Best. Judge. Ever. Summary: Judge Sacco penalizes violators of a "15-foot" noise ordinance by forcing them to sit and listen to such classics as Barney's theme song, Barry Manilow, Patty Clark, and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Winnar.

Watch the video, it's priceless, even if you do have to watch a brief ad first.

Damn, nailed this one, they did, at least for the first few :) I am especially entertained by #38.

09:06 pm - So, correcting an oversight...
...yes, I'm in Maine. Andy and I had an 0700 flight from Austin to NYC, and a 1410 flight from NYC to PWM (Portland, Maine), which actually wound up being a 1700 flight after delays, boarding, and the wait to taxi and takeoff, since apparently they were using one runway for two functions. Go, airlines.

We have a lot of fun planned, we are going to play on and in the lake, and read, and sail, and eat steak, and go to the GIANORMOUS LL Bean down in Freeport, go sea kayaking, have a tour of Portland Harbor, go to a free and awesome Great Big Sea concert, all kinds of stuff.

Cell phone should be working, it died on the way up so I haven't checked yet, and email and IM will work but I'm not promising immediate responses.

Sorry about the lack of communication. I'd have sworn I told everyone concerned, but apparently I only told my coworkers!

Have fun!

11:31 pm - Ah, Friday night depression. Delicious!
Work was mediocre, but Andy met me at the end of the day, we Domain-strolled, then headed home, so some improvement boded.

Where, of course, we fell asleep, even though we'd been intending to go to dinner and then out with friends.

Fortunately, I woke in time to have made it to dinner, but I dislike Trudy's normally and even more when my stomach says "you can just F* right the hell off, woman," and Andy's opinion was a confirmed "urngh-guh." OKay, not dinner. Confirmed myself for Epoch, same answer from Andy. Oh. No Epoch? Well bugger.

In summary, Exercise? oh. Calf. Book! Great, there's several hours never coming back. OKAY! I can at least search the internet to try to fix the issues in my life I'm least satisfied with. Oh. Damn. )

I want my Daddy, damnit. I'm asking Dyol (for those slightly behind, Dyol is the delightful man who hired me for my current position, and he is what a manger should be, as well as being our Regional Manager) what he has in the DC metro/NoVA area, and I'm getting the hell out! That's all I feel like I want tonight, out. Out of this city, away from the worst irritations and influences, to an area where at least my training and raising and professionalism have prepared me for the people I'd be working with.

04:40 am - Well, suck.
Andy and I are both sick.

Sinus infection, or so it appears. Sucks. I'm blaming Andy, since he got sick first :P I'm also up at this ungodly hour because my head is better sitting up, and I had to find my drugs anyway.

Don't think I was asleep for longer than an hour at a time, which also sucked. We keep waking each other up, then dozing back off.

Maybe a hot shower. I wanted one of my Sudafed Quick-Dissolves, which work wonders for long enough for the regular meds to kick in, but I fed them all to Andy, so today's itinerary for the morning also includes a stop at HEB for the correct drug varieties.

12:54 am - ...you people thought I was kidding.
So.

Take one six pack diet orange soda. Add a diet coke for that "burnt orange" color.

Turn the fridge down too low, not low enough to freeze everything, just low enough to freeze the stuff at the back.

Leave the six pack of diet orange and the optional diet coke there in the back.

Ignore the fizzing sounds for a week - hell, the apartment complex has so many odd noises, it's probably not your fridge anyway.

Observe.

Now, for the return trip to white... )

That was a horrible experience.
